A German developer of a zero-emission, battery-electric regional aircraft for up to nine passengers has identified the site that will house the heart of its manufacturing operation.

Munich-based manufacturer Vaeridion on Saturday opened its electric battery development lab at the Bosch Collaboration Campus in Holzkirchen, Germany. The site, located in the Munich suburbs, grants Vaeridion access to hardware and services from Bosch General Aviation Technology—the GA arm of the multinational engineering firm—and ITK Engineering, which Bosch acquired in 2016.

Vaeridion will use the campus to develop powertrains, battery models, and cybersecurity compliance for its digital systems, as well as test and integrate its proprietary high-voltage batteries for its flagship Microliner. The facility will run the gamut of battery manufacturing steps, from individual cells to fully integrated modules.

In addition to Vaeridion co-founders Ivor van Dartel and Sebastian Seemann, the opening of the center was attended by Bavarian State Government Minister Florian Herrmann and Holzkirchen Mayor Christoph Shmid.

“Bavaria is proud of its vibrant startup scene, which benefits from the excellent ecosystem of science, research and technology-passionate policies,” said Herrmann. “Sustainable e-mobility is a future topic with a global market—the development of a battery-powered microliner is therefore a brilliant idea.”

According to a 2018 study, more than 80 percent of Germany’s population lives within 20 kilometers of a regional airfield. Vaeridion’s flagship Microliner is designed to connect those sites and provide a new option for underserved regions, saving customers multiple hours per trip, the company claims. It can also take off and land at large commercial airports.

The aircraft’s glider-inspired wing features a high aspect ratio, minimizing drag in cruise and producing a high glide ratio. The batteries, which can be charged in about 45 minutes, are integrated there rather than in the fuselage to optimize the aircraft’s weight and travel distance, Vaeridion says. The manufacturer claims its design flies with the lowest energy consumption for an aircraft seating up to nine passengers plus crew for distances up to 500 km (310 miles).

Working with Aircraft Design Certification GmbH, which owns design organization approval (DOA) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Vaeridion hopes to certify the model as a GA aircraft before 2030.

By that year, the manufacturer intends to introduce the Microliner on commercial routes in Denmark in partnership with Copenhagen AirTaxi and Copenhagen Helicopter, both based out of Roskilde Airport (EKRK) in Copenhagen. The companies believe the design will be part of a digital platform that allows customers to plan, book, and pay for flights in one place.

“The new green aircraft type requires significantly shorter takeoff and landing distances than traditional aircraft, which allows the use of smaller airfields that are no longer utilized for commercial routes,” said Martin Winther Andersen, CEO of Copenhagen Helicopter. “These routes were abandoned as aircraft types gradually became larger. The Microliner can change that, allowing us to create a dense network of domestic routes again.”

In addition, Belgium and Netherlands-based operator ASL Group plans to utilize the aircraft for short-haul business routes. Aero-Dienst, the operation and maintenance provider for European automobile association ADAC’s fleet of ambulance helicopters, intends to deploy it for aircraft maintenance and air ambulance services.

Lilium, manufacturer of the seven-seat, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) Lilium Jet, is gearing up for series production.

The German manufacturer on Tuesday said it completed initial testing of its flagship aircraft’s propulsion unit, comprising a pair of electric engines and mounting system. For the first time, the engines were taken up to full throttle on a test bench at the company’s headquarters in Munich.

According to Lilium, the propulsion unit performed as expected, representing a key step toward the aircraft’s first crewed flight planned for later this year. The firm will need to demonstrate crewed operations for the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in order to receive type certification in 2025 ahead of a planned 2026 commercial launch.

“For my fellow co-founders and myself, the first test run of the Lilium Jet propulsion unit marks another high point in our journey,” said Lilium co-founder Daniel Wiegand. “It was our shared belief in the radical potential of electric jet technology that brought us together in 2015 and continues to drive Lilium.”

The propulsion unit engines were developed by Lilium in collaboration with a handful of suppliers. Honeywell and Japanese firm Denso supplied the electric motor, Dutch manufacturer Aeronamic provided the compressor fan, and Sweden’s SKF delivered electric motor bearings.

The mounting system, which forms the rear part of the aircraft’s wings and front aerofoils, contains the propulsion unit and a vectoring system.

The system is designed to power the Lilium Jet’s 10 independent battery packs, which feed 36 electric ducted fans. The fans are embedded in the aircraft’s fixed wings and allow it to take off vertically like a helicopter.

The jet will primarily serve routes between towns and inner cities, cruising at 162 knots on trips spanning 25 to 125 sm (22 to 109 nm).

Lilium began production of its flagship aircraft in December with the delivery of the first of seven fuselages to its assembly line in Wessling, Germany. Since then, it has begun manufacturing battery packs and installing an electric propulsion unit serial production line at the facility. Those systems initially will be deployed on the ground and eventually be integrated on the aircraft used for flight testing.

On Tuesday, Lilium said supplier Aernnova has completed the build of the propulsion mounting system. In addition, partner Sener this month delivered the first set of servo-actuators, which rotate the propulsion unit as the aircraft transitions between vertical and horizontal flight.

“Over the past years, we have invested heavily in the technology and secured extensive IP rights,” said Stephen Vellacott, chief technology officer of Lilium. “We now move a step closer to first manned flight and beyond that to the era of commercial electric flight.”

After obtaining EASA type certification in 2025, Lilium intends to secure the same approval from the FAA by leveraging a Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement between the regulators. It is the only eVTOL manufacturer with certification bases from both the FAA and EASA.

In the U.S., Lilium intends for the jet to initially serve customers in South Florida and Southern California through a partnership with newly formed eVTOL operator UrbanLink, which in May placed an order for 20 aircraft. Earlier this week, UrbanLink partnered with Ferrovial Vertiports to build electric aircraft infrastructure in those markets.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) jet manufacturer Lilium is looking to expand its industrial footprint outside Germany, where its core manufacturing facilities are based.

The German manufacturer says it is in “advanced discussions” with the French government to add a high-volume aircraft production facility in France, citing it as an attractive market for its flagship Lilium Jet. The company plans for the aircraft to enter service in 2026.

Lilium says it is evaluating several sites for a manufacturing hub in the country, including in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which it describes as a “hotbed” for aerospace and battery production. The company estimates it will invest up to 400 million euros (about $432 million) into the site over several years, creating as many as 850 jobs.

Discussions on site selection—as well as potential French government subsidies and loan guarantees for the project—were announced Monday at the Choose France Summit in Versailles and are expected to conclude “in the coming weeks,” per Lilium.

The manufacturer says it picked France because of the country’s “well-established aerospace industry, expertise in electric mobility, highly skilled workforce, and supportive government environment.” It added in a post on social media platform X that it is already sourcing Lilium Jet components from French aerospace suppliers Saint-Gobain Aerospace, Michelin, and Expliseat.

Lilium in December began production of the first Lilium Jet prototypes at its final assembly line in Wessling, Germany. However, the company intends for the aircraft to be operated worldwide, including in the French Riviera in partnership with private jet operator GlobeAir.

Adding a manufacturing hub in France positions those operations closer to the company’s service areas, which could simplify its supply chain, for example. However, it says its French facilities are intended to serve the global market.

Lilium on Monday said it has more than 780 binding orders and memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreements from operators for its flagship aircraft, which it will debut publicly at the European Aviation Business Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva later this month.

The company’s most recent agreement includes 20 firm aircraft orders and options apiece from U.S. operator UrbanLink Air Mobility, which intends to fly the aircraft out of Lilium vertiports in South Florida.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer Archer Aviation is ready to produce thousands of lithium-ion battery packs for its flagship Midnight air taxi.

The manufacturer on Wednesday announced it completed the installation of an “automotive style” battery pack manufacturing line within its integrated test lab and manufacturing facilities in San Jose, California.

The production line is intended to complement the company’s air taxi manufacturing facility in Covington, Georgia, where it expects to initially produce up to 650 aircraft per year. The site remains under construction but is “on track” to be completed later this year, Archer reaffirmed Wednesday.

“This is a major milestone for Archer as designing, developing, and mass producing electric propulsion systems that are purpose built for electric aircraft is the key to unlocking the electrification of aviation,” said Tom Muniz, chief technology officer of Archer. “The facility will give us the capability to scale our battery pack production to meet the demands of the output that our Covington, Georgia, facility will be capable of.”

Each of Archer’s Midnight aircraft will run on six of the company’s proprietary lithium-ion battery packs, which power a dozen electric engines. The cylindrical cells within each pack deliver a higher level of safety, performance, and scalability than other form factors, Archer says. The packs are also equipped with a proprietary thermal runaway containment capability.

Archer’s new battery pack manufacturing line is designed to operate at full capacity from day one and, according to the company, is capable of producing up to 15,000 battery packs per year.

Certain portions of the manufacturing process—including cell testing and loading, adhesive dispensing, laser cleaning, laser welding, and end-of-line testing—have been automated. The manufacturer says this is intended to improve product quality and operator safety while making it easier to trace data across the manufacturing cycle.

Unlike the manufacturing strategy for the Midnight air taxi, which leverages outside suppliers to provide the majority of the aircraft’s components, Archer chose to vertically integrate battery cell design and production, building and assembling those components in house.

The battery packs in March successfully endured a series of 50-foot drop tests, a feat they will need to accomplish again during for-credit testing with the FAA. Similar to the 50-foot fuel tank drop test for rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft, the evaluation is meant to gauge the batteries’ ability to withstand a significant impact, which could cause a leak, fire, or explosion if the tech is not up to standard. Archer considers it to be one of the most challenging tests in the type-certification process for Midnight.

The manufacturer is also evaluating its battery pack technology with NASA via a Space Act agreement with the agency. Initial testing will gauge battery cell safety, energy, and power performance, studying how they might function in “extreme abuse cases.” The battery pack testing arrangement is just one portion of the agreement, Archer says.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi manufacturer Joby Aviation on Monday rolled out the second prototype aircraft built on its pilot production line at Marina Municipal Airport (KOAR) in California, where it also broke ground on a previously announced expansion.

Joby rolled out its first production prototype from Marina in June, delivering it in September to Edwards Air Force base (KEDW) in California ahead of schedule. There, U.S. Air Force personnel are using the aircraft to conduct logistics and other missions during joint testing. Joby and AFWERX, the innovation arm of the Air Force, signed an aircraft development and flight testing contract in 2020 that has since been expanded multiple times.

Joby says it expects its second prototype, on display at Marina on Monday, to join its counterpart at Edwards later this year following final testing.

The manufacturer designed its flagship air taxi to carry a pilot and as many as four passengers on trips up to 100 sm (87 nm), cruising at 200 mph (174 knots). The company is targeting commercial launches in major U.S. cities such as New York and Los Angeles, where it will ferry customers to and from airports in partnership with Delta Air Lines, in 2025.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Marina expansion, which Joby expects will more than double the facility’s production capacity, was attended by a who’s who of local stakeholders, including the city of Marina and the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP), and Drone, Automation, and Robotics Technology (DART) groups. A representative of the company’s manufacturing partner, auto manufacturer Toyota, was also present.

“This facility will play a foundational role in our future success, and it is a privilege to once again be growing our footprint and our workforce in California,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby. “I am grateful to the local community and our many supporters who have advocated on our behalf to reach this point and to Toyota for everything they continue to do to make manufacturing a success at Joby.”

Joby expects the expanded Marina facility to be open for operations by next year. The company is targeting a production rate of 25 aircraft annually as its scaled manufacturing plant in Dayton, Ohio, comes online.

The Dayton facility, selected in September, is expected to initially churn out 500 aircraft per year when full-scale operations begin in 2025. The 140-acre site has enough space for the company to one day fill it with more than 2 million square feet of manufacturing assets, which figures to expand capacity further.

However, Marina also has an important role to play for Joby. The company in its 2023 earnings report said a significant portion of the approximately $450 million in cash and short-term investments it projects for 2024 will go toward the site’s expansion. On Monday, it confirmed that a pilot training and flight simulation center as well as a maintenance hub, intended to support early operations, are among the planned facilities.

The expansion is funded in part by the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), which in November awarded Joby a $9.8 million California Competes grant.

The prototype aircraft being built at Marina will further support Joby’s quest for type certification. The company’s initial prototype was responsible for its first $1 million in revenue, as reported in its 2023 earnings: early flight services provided to the Department of Defense, conducted at Marina Municipal Airport.

Since then, the manufacturer has committed to two more air taxi deliveries to MacDill Air Force Base (KMCF) in Tampa, Florida, in an expansion of its $131 million contract with AFWERX. The agreement calls for the delivery of nine aircraft, of which the company has now firmly committed to four.

Evaluations conducted under the contract figure to help Joby refine its air taxi design ahead of for-credit type certification testing with the FAA. The company in February said it is ramping up to for-credit testing following the regulator’s acceptance of the certification plans for its aircraft, components, and systems.

Following the rollout of its second air taxi prototype, Joby says another two aircraft are in the final assembly phase. Parts for “multiple subsequent aircraft” are in production at the company’s recently acquired facility in Ohio, from where they will be shipped to Marina.

German manufacturer Lilium, which is developing what it says will be the first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) jet for regional travel, is continuing to ramp up manufacturing.

Following the start of aircraft production in December, the company on Tuesday began building the aviation-grade battery packs that will power its flagship Lilium Jet: a seven-seat eVTOL designed for regional air mobility (RAM) services.

Each Jet will be fitted with 10 independent battery packs, intended to boost range. The packs are also redundant, allowing the aircraft to fly and land safely if one fails. According to Lilium, production follows extensive testing all the way down to the individual battery cell.

The first battery packs off the assembly line at the manufacturer’s purpose-built battery factory, just outside its headquarters in Munich, will be used to perform verification testing ahead of the Lilium Jet’s first piloted flight. That milestone is being targeted for late 2024.

“The start of production of the battery packs is a proud moment for Lilium,” said Yves Yemsi, chief operating officer of Lilium. “Battery technology is central to the goal of delivering sustainable regional air mobility, including overcoming the challenges of developing and industrializing a battery pack that will meet the stringent safety standards of aircraft certification.”

Lilium’s battery packs are composed of lithium-ion cells with silicon-dominant anodes. The company claims these enable greater energy, power, and fast-charging capabilities than graphite anode cells, which are much more common in batteries today. However, many automakers, including Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and General Motors, are eyeing transitions to silicon anodes, which are believed to provide a higher energy density than graphite.

The packs are designed to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) safety standards around shock resistance, heat resistance, containment, and redundancy. According to Lilium, it has secured intellectual property rights for the technology.

The German manufacturer says its batteries are designed to support a higher power and energy density for regional—rather than urban—air mobility operations, with the implication being that they are more powerful than those of competitors focused on urban air mobility (UAM).

RAM and UAM are subsets of advanced air mobility (AAM). RAM seeks to connect cities within a region, while UAM focuses more on intracity operations. The Lilium Jet is expected to cruise at 162 knots on regional trips spanning 25 to 125 sm (22 to 109 nm).

Each Jet’s 10 battery packs will power electric jet engines produced by Honeywell and Japan’s Denso. Propulsion comes in the form of 36 electric ducted fans embedded in the aircraft’s fixed wings. The unique configuration sacrifices hover efficiency for improved cruise efficiency and lower noise.

Lilium began building its flagship aircraft in December with the delivery of seven fuselages to its manufacturing facility, ramping up production in February with the installation of a serial production line for the Jet’s propulsion systems.

These components and others will be assembled into seven aircraft, which the company intends to use for piloted flight testing and, later, for-credit evaluations with EASA. It hopes to achieve type certification in 2025 ahead of a planned commercial launch in 2026.

In February, Lilium designated Orlando International Airport (KMCO) as the hub for its U.S. operations in Florida.

Chinese electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer EHang says it has obtained the world’s first production certification for a pilotless eVTOL design, allowing it to begin mass manufacturing.

The approval was granted by the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC), representatives of which met with EHang founder, chairman, and CEO Huazhi Hu at a ceremony in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District on Sunday.

The event was attended by local government officials, including the district mayor of Huangpu District and deputy mayor of Yunfu City—the site of EHang’s main production facility. The facility is expected to churn out 600 aircraft annually once production scales.

EHang has now obtained production, type, and standard airworthiness certification for its flagship EH216-S: a self-flying, two-passenger design with a range of about 19 nm and cruise speed around 70 knots. The company said the latest approval gives the company “all requisite regulatory certifications” needed to lay the groundwork for commercial operations in China.

“We believe the collaborative efforts of pioneering low-altitude enterprises like EHang and governments, will infuse the industry with momentum and confidence, propelling the low-altitude economy towards a prosperous future,” said Dan Xu, deputy district mayor of Huangpu District.

Autonomous eVTOL aircraft like EHang’s EH216-S are intended to form what Chinese officials have termed the “low-altitude economy.” Similar to the advanced air mobility (AAM) industry being developed in places such as the U.S. and European Union, the low-altitude economy is expected to encompass aerial tourism and sightseeing, emergency medical services, passenger air taxi flights, and other eVTOL-related activities.

EHang in December gave citizens a glimpse of the promised services with commercial demonstration flights in the cities of Guangzhou and Hefei. According to the company, these represented the first passenger-carrying flights by an eVTOL. However, customers flew for free, and the service is not yet routine.

With production certification now joining EHang’s prior approvals, the company is in position to scale up those operations.

“The issuance of the PC [production certification] is pivotal for the EH216-S, as it opens the door to mass production and a crucial step for our advancement towards commercial operations,” said Hu. “With the PC as the starting point, we are poised to gradually expand production and delivery to meet escalating market demands. Our vision is to introduce safe and reliable pilotless eVTOL aircraft to the global market.”

The production certificate is validation from the CAAC that EHang’s mass production quality management system meets the regulator’s airworthiness requirements, authorizing it for mass manufacturing.

The quality management system covers EH216-S’s raw materials, supplier management, production organization and quality control, pre-delivery testing, and post-sale repair and maintenance. The system also enables traceability and safety control to ensure the aircraft rolling off the production line adhere to EHang’s type design requirements, the company says.

CAAC assessed 19 elements of the system and the company’s production capabilities, concluding it has the ability to produce aircraft that will fly safely in Chinese airspace.

EHang says the company is now preparing for commercial operations in China, such as by training personnel and developing EH216-S operational systems. According to the manufacturer, about 20 Chinese provinces are prioritizing the development of the low-altitude economy in 2024, including by enacting favorable policies and regulations, allocating funding and subsidies, and identifying suitable eVTOL takeoff and landing sites.

Recently released CAAC guidance positions the Nansha District in Guangzhou—one of the two cities in which EHang flew in December—as the focal point for the industry. The Guangzhou municipal government has announced several policy initiatives intended to back EHang, while Hefei has committed to invest as much as $100 million.

EHang’s China market entry is also being heavily supported by the central government, which last week released plans for the low-altitude economy through 2030. Beijing’s upcoming initiatives include the construction of takeoff and landing infrastructure, streamlining of airworthiness certification, and improvement of the country’s air traffic management system. The government also called to establish a network of eVTOL demonstration sites, with a particular focus on urban use cases.

EHang, working with CAAC, said it will help establish the world’s first regulatory system and standards for commercial eVTOL operations in the second quarter of this year. Several regulators, including the FAA and more recently the U.K.’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), have proposed guidelines for such services, but few, if any, have finalized them.

Throughout 2024, EHang says it will coordinate with multiple governments to build eVTOL vertiports and shape the “benchmark” cities it views as ideal candidates for the low-altitude economy. It intends to launch commercial operation ceremonies for use cases such as aerial tourism and urban air taxis, using its demonstration sites in Guangzhou and Hefei in addition to its urban air mobility (UAM) operation center at OH Bay in Shenzhen.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) manufacturer Joby Aviation is ramping up activity at its scaled manufacturing plant, under construction at Dayton International Airport (KDAY) in Dayton, Ohio.

The company on Tuesday said it acquired an existing on-airport facility and has begun hiring to support its initial manufacturing operations, which it expects to begin later this year. Joby called the acquisition the “first step” in its plan to build facilities capable of churning out up to 500 aircraft per year in Dayton, beginning in 2025.

The manufacturer also said Tuesday that its plans are expected to include the design and construction of a larger greenfield factory at the airfield.

“We’re pleased to be able to acquire an underutilized facility at Dayton International Airport and repurpose it as a modern, high-tech manufacturing center to serve as our initial manufacturing footprint in the region,” said Didier Papadopoulos, president of aircraft OEM at Joby. “Later this year, we expect to begin subtractive manufacturing of titanium and aluminum aircraft parts as we continue to grow our workforce in Dayton.”

Joby’s tiltrotor eVTOL is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers on up to 100 sm (87 nm) trips, cruising at 200 mph (174 knots). The company anticipates commercial launches in cities such as New York and Los Angeles in 2025 in partnership with Delta Air Lines. It will operate the aircraft itself, unlike many eVTOL air taxi competitors.

Joby will outfit its newly acquired facility to manufacture aircraft parts, which will be sent to the company’s Marina, California, pilot production line: a 120,000-square-foot facility at Marina Municipal Airport (KOAR).

Didier Papadopoulos, president of aircraft OEM at Joby, said on the company’s earnings call last month that one aircraft is in final assembly at the Marina facility, with two more expected to roll out shortly after. JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby, estimated the site will produce about a dozen aircraft by year’s end.

“We expect to reach a production run rate equivalent to one aircraft a month by the end of the year as we continue to ramp production in support of certification and commercialization,” said Bevirt on the company’s earnings call.

Joby last year hosted flight services at Marina for the U.S. Department of Defense—under a $131 million contract with AFWERX, the innovation arm of the Air Force—conducted using a prototype aircraft.

An intended expansion to the site would double its annual production capacity, increasing it to 25 aircraft per year as the company works on its scaled manufacturing plant in Dayton.

Joby’s 140-acre site at Dayton International Airport will be capable of producing up to 500 eVTOL aircraft per year when full-scale operations begin in 2025, according to the manufacturer. It plans to invest as much as $500 million and create up to 2,000 jobs.

Toyota, Joby’s largest investor, will advise the company as it prepares for scaled production. Last year, the automaker agreed to supply powertrain and actuation components for its air taxi.

According to company projections, the Dayton site will one day be large enough for Joby to build 2 million square feet of manufacturing assets.

China’s AutoFlight on Tuesday said it took an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft where one had never been before.

The manufacturer claims to have completed the world’s first public electric air taxi demonstration between two cities, flying its Prosperity eVTOL across the Pearl River Delta between the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. The flight—a journey that would take about three hours by car—lasted just 20 minutes.

AutoFlight’s five-seat air taxi—designed for a pilot plus up to four passengers—flew fully autonomous, with no onboard crew. The aircraft traveled through a complex environment home to 86 million and bordering several international airports, including Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH), Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (ZGSZ), and Macau International Airport (VMMC).

Prosperity is thought to hold the record for the longest eVTOL flight, completing a 155 sm (135 nm) journey in February 2023 to eclipse the previous high-water mark held by Joby Aviation.

“We are thrilled to showcase AutoFlight’s cutting-edge capabilities [Tuesday] in the world’s first cross-sea and intercity eVTOL demonstration flight,” said Tian Yu, founder, CEO, and chairman of AutoFlight. “Working closely together with the local authorities and partners here, and in other jurisdictions around the world, we will continue to drive this revolution to bring safe, efficient, sustainable and affordable eVTOL flight options to cities around the world.”

The flight path between Shenzhen and Zhuhai is one of an estimated 100 eVTOL routes being developed by the local government to form China’s low-altitude economy, akin to the advanced air mobility (AAM) industry developing in the U.S. and elsewhere. 

AutoFlight said the strategy will eventually create hundreds of air taxi routes and thousands of vertiports in southern China’s Greater Bay Area, providing passenger transport, tourism, logistics, and emergency services. According to the firm, plans are in development to achieve 300,000 uncrewed cargo flights in the region per year.

AutoFlight’s Prosperity boasts an estimated 155 sm (135 nm) range and 124 mph (108 knots) cruise speed, with a maximum takeoff weight of about 4,400 pounds. It is designed for instrument and full weather operations.

Prosperity’s all-electric, zero-emission propulsion systems powers 10 lift and three push propellers, producing just 65 dBA of noise during hover—approximately the volume of laughter or normal conversation. This will allow the aircraft to blend in with typical city traffic, AutoFlight said.

The aircraft was designed by Frank Stephenson, who has developed automobile concepts for Ferrari, McLaren, Maserati, and others. Stephenson was also the former head of product design for Lilium, a German eVTOL manufacturer designing an electric jet for premium customers. Prosperity’s “spacious and ergonomic” interior, which features inflight information and entertainment, mirrors Stephenson’s work for other high-end brands.

AutoFlight expects to receive certification from the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) for crewed Prosperity passenger flights within the next two years. It also plans to perform crewed demonstrations at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, alongside other eVTOL manufacturers such as Volocopter. Working with Groupe ADP, which manages Paris international airports, the firm will install vertiport infrastructure at five sites in the region.

The manufacturer also intends to leverage its relationship with air transport operator Heli-Eastern, its partner in the Greater Bay Area. Heli-Eastern agreed to purchase 100 Prosperity aircraft, which it will fly on routes similar to the one demonstrated this week, as well as out of other regional transportation hubs.

“We warmly welcome our strong cooperation with Heli-Eastern, and together we are rapidly moving towards fully operational air-taxi routes all across the region,” Tian said.

While AutoFlight holds the record for the longest eVTOL flight, a Chinese competitor is the first in the industry to fly actual passengers.

EHang achieved the milestone in December after obtaining the world’s first eVTOL type certificate a few months prior, completing commercial demonstrations in Guangzhou and Hefei. The flights did not mark the official launch of routine service but represented a key step toward commercialization of the company’s self-flying air taxi.

According to CAAC, China will certify autonomous or remotely piloted eVTOLs before turning to aircraft with onboard pilots, which could similarly benefit AutoFlight. The company is also developing the CarryAll, an uncrewed cargo version of Prosperity with a payload of about 1,100 pounds and similar performance specifications.

According to comments from Mark Henning, managing director for AutoFlight Europe, the CarryAll is expected to obtain CAAC certification in 2024, with Prosperity following two to three years later. European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and FAA approval for Prosperity would come one to two years after that.

Lilium, the manufacturer behind the design of the seven-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) Lilium Jet, is ramping up production of its flagship model.

The German firm on Monday said it has begun installing a serial production line for the Jet’s electric propulsion units at its manufacturing facility in Wessling, Germany. The company expects the first prototype propulsion systems—which will support for-credit type certification testing with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)—to roll off its production line in the second quarter of 2024.

The production of electric propulsion systems for Lilium’s flagship Jet marks another key milestone in the commercialization of the aircraft, which the company began building in December. It hopes to achieve type certification in 2025 ahead of a global launch in 2026.

Lilium’s propulsion assembly line was designed in partnership with automation and robotics supplier Schnaithmann Maschinenbau GmbH, with which the manufacturer has worked for years to develop production plans. Schnaithmann will also provide workflow design, jogs, and tools for Lilium’s aerostructures assembly and final assembly line.

“The electric jet engine is a unique, core Lilium technology, critical for aircraft performance and for which we have secured not only a team of highly qualified system suppliers but also important intellectual property,” said Jan Nowacki, senior vice president of manufacturing for Lilium. “With the support of Schnaithmann, we look forward to implementing state-of-the-art manufacturing solutions capable of being scaled up and replicated for high-volume production.”

Lilium and Schnaithmann developed initial production plans several years ago in anticipation of this week’s announcement. The manufacturer’s aerostructures assembly line—located in the same building as the newly announced propulsion system assembly line—already uses Schnaithmann equipment to handle the Jet’s wings and canards.

The Wessling site also comprises a testing and manufacturing center, propulsion and aerostructures facility, final assembly building, and battery assembly building and logistics hub.

“With nearly 40 years of experience in supplying automation technology to global industries, we are proud to participate in the industrialization of the Lilium Jet,” said Gerd Maier, member of the Schnaithmann management board. “The eVTOL industry has the potential to change aviation in a positive, sustainable way, and we are delighted to be able to play a key role in helping Lilium scale up towards high-volume production.”

Lilium delivered the first of seven Jet fuselages to Wessling in December. The company will manufacture seven aircraft to use for EASA type certification validation, which it expects will begin late this year.

The manufacturer’s all-electric seven-seater is expected to fly passengers between towns and inner cities, cruising at 162 knots on trips spanning 25 to 125 sm (22 to 109 nm). The firm said the aircraft’s propulsion unit will be key in providing performance, unit economics, and comfort for regional air mobility (RAM) services.

RAM is a subset of advanced air mobility (AAM) that involves connecting cities across a broader region, as Lilium plans to do. It contrasts with the urban air mobility (UAM) approach adopted by many competitors, which intend to concentrate flights within a single city or metropolitan area, such as New York or Los Angeles.

The Lilium Jet propulsion unit consists of electric jet engines (or e-motors) integrated into a propulsion mounting system, which forms the rear part of the aircraft’s wings and front aerofoils. The company said the system will improve payload and aerodynamic efficiency, reduce noise, and provide thrust vector control to maneuver the Jet through all phases of flight.

Several components for the propulsion unit are provided by suppliers such as Honeywell, which is working with partners Denso, Aeronamic, and SKF to deliver e-motors, fans, and electric motor bearings, respectively.

The system powers 36 electric ducted fans embedded in the Jet’s wings. The unique architecture differs from competitors such as Joby Aviation or Archer Aviation, which are using tilt rotors that reorient themselves during the transition between vertical and forward flight.

In 2023, Lilium assembled the first complete electric engine for the Jet on a pre-series line. The engine is designed to deliver what the manufacturer claims is an industry-leading power density of over 100 kilowatts, despite the system weighing just less than 9 pounds.

Crewed flights of the Lilium Jet are expected to begin later this year as the company eyes for-credit testing with EASA. But Lilium is also the only eVTOL manufacturer with certification bases from both EASA and the FAA.

Earlier this month, the company designated Orlando International Airport (KMCO) as a key hub for its RAM service in Florida, which it announced in 2020. Fractional aircraft ownership company NetJets agreed tentatively to purchase 150 Lilium Jets and operate them across the Florida network, which will be supported with maintenance services from Bristow Group. FlightSafety International has agreed to train an initial cohort of Florida eVTOL pilots.

Lilium further announced support for Florida Legislature House Bill 981, which would designate Orlando International Airport as Florida’s official AAM test site. The legislation would also create a pathway for safe, efficient vertiport permitting in the state.

Last week, Lilium placed an order for 120 Star Charge electric aircraft charging systems, intended to juice up its ground and flight test aircraft. The manufacturer will also deliver chargers to customers investing in vertiports, further supporting its RAM ecosystem.

In addition, Lilium last week partnered with private and commercial operator PhilJets—which agreed to purchase 10 aircraft—to explore RAM networks in the Philippines, Cambodia, and across Southeast Asia.
